The first Hydro-X Legionella Seminar of 2018 was held last Thursday (12th of April) at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham. Focusing on the HSE Enforcement, the legal and human costs of Legionella.

In 2006 the first Hydro-X Legionella Seminar was held at Ranmoor Hall in Sheffield. Since 2006 we have held seminar at famous venues including Manchester United Old Trafford, The Orbit Queen Elizabeth Olympic park, Emirates Stadium and Edgbaston Cricket Ground. 12 years of running successful Legionella Seminars. Our seminars are continuously updated with relevant topics and important information. At our latest seminar, an additional new presentation on HVAC compliance has been incorporated focusing system inspection, testing and maintenance.

Vicky Smedley is the chief trainer for HX Training – the specialist division within the Hydro-X Group for Legionella Training Compliance.
Vicky has many years experience in the water Hygiene Compliance industry, and is qualified to City & Guilds, IOSH, and NEBOSH standards for delivering Legionella competence courses.
Vicky kicked off the seminar giving an introduction to Legionella, covering the following:

- What is Legionellosis?
- How can Legionellosis be prevented?
- How is Legionella Control Regulated?
Dr Paul McDermott
Former Specialist Inspector of the HSE and Key Contributor to the new ACoP L8:2013 and HSG274
Dr Paul McDermott had an Honours degree and PhD in microbiology and spent the first 11 years of his career in microbiology research and as a university lecturer.
Following this, Paul worked as a specialist inspector in the Health and Safety Executive’s Biological Agents Unit. In his role as a regulator, much of Paul’s time was spent working in the field of occupational Legionella Risk Control where he developed both a deep understanding of the regulatory framework and an appreciation of the practicalities effective Management of water-Associated Infection Risks.
Paul has acted as expert witness in a number of Legionella enforcement cases and has contributed to the production of numerous Legionella -related guidance documents.
Former Specialist Inspector of the HSE and lead Author of the ACoP L8:2001
Ken Ashley has worked in the field of Microbiology since graduating from Liverpool University with an Honours Degree in Microbiology. He was later awarded an MSc in Microbiology by dissertation, again from Liverpool University.
During his career, he lectured at Liverpool Polytechnic and was Scientific Director of a Microbiological Diagnostics company. In 1991 he joined HSE as HM Specialist Inspector of Health and Safety and left HSE in early 2003 to form Kenneth Ashley Consultancy Ltd. During his time with HSE, he attended to give advice at all the large outbreaks of Legionnaires Disease in the UK, was the lead author of the Legionella Approved Code of Practice L8 and co-author of the CIBSE Guidance TM13.
He has also acted as an expert witness for a number of HSE prosecutions and for the Crown when prosecuting for manslaughter alleged to have been caused by Legionnaires’ Disease. Currently, he acts for a large number of local authorities, government departments and other organisations where he advises on colonised building and general Legionella management issues.
BESA Trustee, and lead instructor at the National Duct Clean Academy
Alan has over 30 years experience in the Ventilation Hygiene Industry. He was actively involved in the update to TR19 – A core document providing regulations and guidelines that govern good practice for the cleaning of ventilation ducts.
Alan has also contributed to the New BESA competency assessment courses & ventilation hygiene apprentice scheme.
