Legionella Awareness Training Course

City & Guilds accredited  |  HXT-W01  |  ACoP L8 and HSG274

Our City & Guilds accredited Legionella Awareness training course (HXT-W01) gives anyone who works with, or around, hot and cold water systems a thorough grounding in Legionella bacteria, Legionnaires’ disease and the control measures required under HSE guidance ACoP L8 and HSG274. The course is also known as an ACoP L8 course or water hygiene course, and it is the ideal starting point for Legionella training.

It is the essential entry-level qualification for landlords, facilities managers, building owners and anyone with day-to-day responsibility for water system hygiene who has not been appointed as the Responsible Person.

For most delegates, this is the correct starting point. If you have been appointed as a Legionella Responsible Person or Duty Holder, this course is not sufficient on its own. You will need Legionella Responsible Person Training (HXT-W02) instead.

Who Should Attend Legionella Awareness Training?

  •     Landlords and residential property managers
  •     Facilities managers and building maintenance staff
  •     Business premises owners and office managers
  •     Caretakers, cleaners and operational staff who interact with water systems
  •     Anyone who may be exposed to aerosols from water systems
  •     Experienced staff who have not completed Legionella awareness training for two or more years and need a refresher

Do I Need Legionella Awareness Training?

If you are responsible for managing or working with water systems that could harbour Legionella bacteria, then yes. Appropriate training is a legal requirement, and ACoP L8 identifies lack of training as a key causative factor in Legionella outbreaks.

Completing this course demonstrates that you have met the entry-level training requirement set out in ACoP L8 and HSG274.

What Does the Legionella Awareness Course Cover?

The course introduces Legionella at entry level, fulfilling the most basic training requirement described in ACoP L8. Delegates learn how to identify risk and implement practical control measures to help prevent Legionnaires’ disease.

Legionella bacteria and Legionnaires’ disease

  •     What Legionella is, how it enters water systems and the conditions that encourage it to grow, including stagnant water, temperature ranges and biofilm
  •     Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, how it affects the lungs and which groups are most at risk

Transmission and risk

  •     Routes of transmission, including aerosol generation from showers, cooling towers, spa pools and other water outlets
  •     Which systems present a reasonably foreseeable risk

Legislation and compliance

  •     The basics of ACoP L8, HSG274 and COSHH
  •     Employer and employee responsibilities, and the legal implications of non-compliance

Risk assessments and written schemes

  •     Why risk assessments matter and what a Legionella risk assessment should include
  •     The role of a written scheme of control, and how to document control measures, monitoring schedules and emergency procedures

Monitoring and inspection of hot and cold water systems

  •     Routine inspection and monitoring, including temperature control: hot water at 50°C or above and cold water below 20°C
  •     Maintenance methods such as flushing regimes, descaling, disinfection and filter changes
  •     Best practice for tank inspections, sampling and vessel purging to prevent stagnation and contamination

Management pathways and responsibilities

  •     The importance of an effective management structure for Legionella control
  •     The roles of duty holders, Responsible Persons and appointed risk assessors
  •     How to respond to outbreaks or failed risk assessments

By the end of the course, delegates leave with the confidence and knowledge to contribute to Legionella risk management and help maintain compliance.
