A 2-day course for individuals who have the responsibility for undertaking Legionella Risk Assessments, or for ensuring one is carried out. This course is for people who already have an understanding of legionnaires disease and how hot and cold-water systems operate. Learners will leave with a better understanding of risk assessments for hot and cold-water systems.

Course Pre-Requisite

All prospective delegates will be required to complete and successfully pass an online sixty-minute course and accompanying assessment before applying for a place on the course.

This is to ensure that all delegates have an understanding and basic knowledge of terminology used when describing hot & cold systems and have basic knowledge of legionnaires disease.

Legionella Risk Assessment for Hot & Cold Water Systems Training Course Overview

This legionella risk assessing course is designed for delegates who are either responsible for undertaking a risk assessment or are tasked with ensuring that a risk assessment for legionella is undertaken. 

This is a 2-day course that covers all the aspects of performing a basic risk assessment for legionella, looking at the legal requirements, assessing the risk in areas where legionella bacteria in water systems may proliferate and sampling techniques. 

This course includes a written risk assessment exercise looking at both hot and cold water systems of a fictitious company using schematic diagrams. You will be carrying out a visual inspection and correctly identifying several non-compliant issues

This risk assessment training course covers the following topics:

  • Risk Assessment requirements as covered by the ACOP L8 and HSG274 Part 2
  • Following risk assessment procedures covered by BS8580
  • Looking at Written Scheme
  • Preparation and scope
  • Determining Risk
  • Appraisal of the following:
    • Management
    • Safe Desgin / Operation
    • Maintenance / Monitoring / Inspection
  • System surveys
  • Identification of areas in hot and cold-water systems where legionella bacteria may be proliferate
  • Modification of systems to minimise or eliminate the risk of legionellosis
  • Legionella Sampling Techniques
  • The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations / Byelaws (Scotland)

  • The learner will leave with an understanding of statutory legislation relating to the course subject.

  • The learner will gain an understanding of the requirements relating to the site survey of hot and cold water supply systems
  • Delegates will receive an understanding of the issues surrounding hot and cold-water systems within residential accommodation
  • Learners will also gain knowledge of temperature guidance for hot and cold water supply systems.
  • Delegates will leave with an understanding of biological sampling techniques
  • Learners will gain an understanding of POU filtration techniques
  • The learner will get an understanding of water safety groups

The aims for this Hot and Cold water systems risk assessment course are:

The assessment for this course comprises:

  • A sixty-minute written assessment
  • A forty-minute multiple choice question paper

The delegate will need to achieve a mark of 75% to pass the course.

On successful completion of this Risk Assessing for Hot and Cold Sytems Training Course, you will receive a City and Guilds Accredited Programme Certificate.

Paper copies of certificates can be supplied subject to a small administration fee.

This will need renewing every 2 years.

The assessment for this course is covered in 2 parts. 

  • Written Assessment:
    • Open Book
    • 60 min assessment
    • Consists of 20 questions
    • The pass mark is 75%
  • Multiple Choice Question Paper
    • Open Book
    • 40 min assessment
    • Consists of 20 questions
    • The pass mark is 75%

Successful completion of this course and assessment delegates will receive a City & Guilds Accredited Programme Certificate. It is recommended that the delegate does HXT-W02 (Legionella Responsible Persons Training Course) every 2 years after completion.
