Why do you need to complete a Legionella Awareness ACoP L8 Course?

The ACoP L8 (Approved Code of Practice L8) is the UK’s primary document for controlling legionella bacteria, approved by the HSE. It provides essential guidance on managing the risks associated with legionella in water systems.

This code is supplemented by HSG274, which offers additional guidance and practical advice for controlling legionella across various areas of the water hygiene industry.

Both the ACoP L8 and HSG274 work alongside the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002

Although following ACoP L8 is not mandatory, it holds a special legal status:

“If you are prosecuted for a breach of health and safety law, and it is shown that you did not follow the relevant provisions of the Code, you must demonstrate compliance with the law in some other way, or the Court may find you at fault.”
