Groundworker Training Course – Water Regulations Overview
This training course is aimed at contractors that work with water supplies and the installation of pipework. Delegates at the end of this course will successfully be able to:
- Identify Water Regulations
- Including any key difference between England/Welsh regulations, and Scottish Byelaws (2014) & regulations set in Northern Ireland (2009).
- Interpret Water Regulations
- Comply with Water Regs
- Be able to Identify non-compliances
- Successful pass the Groundworker Water Regulations Assessment
- Apply to be an approved member of a recognised scheme (i.e Approved Contractor)
This course is concluded by a multiple-choice assessment.

This City and Guild Accredited Programme for Ground working looks in to the UKs water regulation in detail. It covers Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 for England and Wales, and the differences that are in the – The Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws 2014, as well as the – The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2009.

Groundworker Training Course Information
1. Understand the requirements of Part 1 of the Regulations and Byelaws
2. Understand the requirements of Part 2 of the Regulations/Byelaws
3. Understand the requirements of Part 3 of the Regulations/Byelaws
4. Understand the fluid categories as set out in Schedule 1
5. Understand terminology used to Understand requirements of Schedule 2 of the Regulations/Byelaws (Schedule 2, Paragraph 1)
6. Understand the requirements for materials and substances in contact with Wholesome water
7. Understand the requirements for water fittings (Schedule 2, Paragraphs 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7)
- Know the design and installation requirements for water systems (Schedule 2, paragraphs 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)
- Understand the requirements for the prevention of cross-connection to unwholesome water (Schedule 2, Paragraph 14)
- Understand the requirements for backflow prevention (Schedule 2, Paragraph 15)
- Know the requirements for water supplied for outside use (Schedule 2 Paragraph 12)
- Understand the requirements for hygienic working practices
- Understand other legislation surrounding the installation of supply pipes
- Understand how to become an Approved Contractor
- On completion of the course you should be able to:

Water Regulations assessment
• If successful, apply to become an approved member of a
recognised scheme (i.e. Approved Contractor)
At the end of the training, each delegate undertakes a multiple choice assessment consisting of 40 questions, with 32 correct answers achieving a pass grade (80%).
Successful candidates will achieve a City and Guilds Accredited Certificate in Ground Workers: Water Regulations Training
Every 3 years the certificate should be refreshed.
Approved Contractors
As part of this Hydro-X Training course for Groundworkers, there is a section with information on how to be an Approved Contractor.
This course will allow the candidate to apply as an approved contractor through WIAPS, run by Waters Regs, is one of the largest approved contractors schemes in the UK and covers 15 of England and Wales, with Thames Water, Severn Trent and Anglian offering there own scheme.
What are the benefits of being an Approved Contractor?
Becoming an approved contractor through one of the approved schemes supported by the Water Industry (see table below) allows you to be not only part of a recognised national body, it also allows for certain installations to be ‘self-certified’.
