Cleaning & Disinfection of Hot & Cold Water Systems (Practical) Training Course Overview

This 1-day, City & Guilds accredited course is designed for water hygiene professionals, facilities managers, and engineers who are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting hot and cold water systems as part of their role. Delivered in a classroom setting and combined with hands-on practical training, the course equips delegates with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to carry out effective and compliant water system disinfections.

Legionella control remains one of the most important aspects of water hygiene management in commercial, industrial, and residential settings. Poorly maintained or improperly disinfected hot and cold water systems can create the ideal conditions for waterborne pathogens, including Legionella bacteria, to develop and spread. This course ensures delegates understand not only how to carry out a disinfection, but why it’s a critical part of ongoing water safety compliance.

Key Learning Outcomes

Throughout the course, delegates will cover a range of essential topics, including:

  • Why disinfection is necessary for hot and cold water systems, including an overview of waterborne pathogens such as Legionella, and the specific circumstances that trigger the need for disinfection (e.g. new installations, contamination events, extended system downtime, or routine maintenance schedules)
  • Legal and regulatory requirements relating to water system disinfection, including:
    • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
    • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
    • Confined Space Regulations
    • Working at Height Regulations
  • Practical disinfection methods, including the safe handling, dosing, and application of sodium hypochlorite to carry out a thorough and compliant disinfection process, from initial system assessment through to post-disinfection flushing and verification

Why Attend This Water System Disinfection Course?

Unlike purely theory-based training, this course blends classroom learning with genuine hands-on experience. Using our purpose-built training facilities, delegates work with the same tools, equipment, and techniques used across the water hygiene industry, applying their knowledge to realistic, industry-standard scenarios rather than simply reading about procedures in a manual.

This practical approach means delegates leave the course genuinely job-ready, with the confidence to carry out disinfections safely and correctly in real working environments — whether in commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, hotels, or other premises with hot and cold water systems.

Delegates will also develop a strong working competence in ACOP L8 (Fourth Edition) — the Health and Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice for controlling Legionella — and HSG274 Part 2 technical guidance, both of which form the backbone of legal compliance for water system management in the UK. This grounding ensures delegates aren’t just following steps, but understand the regulatory framework behind every action they take.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for water hygiene technicians, plumbing and building services engineers, facilities and maintenance managers, and anyone with responsibility for legionella control and water system compliance within their organisation.

What Will I Achieve?

On successful completion of the Cleaning & Disinfection of Hot & Cold Water Systems course, delegates receive a City & Guilds accredited certificate, providing recognised proof of competence in this critical area of water hygiene. This certification is valid for 2 years, after which delegates are required to complete a refresher course to maintain their competency and ensure their skills and knowledge remain up to date with current best practice and legislation.
