Scaling:

Scaling is one of the most significant issues with closed systems affecting how effectively and efficiently they operate. In our 34 years of experience scaling is one of the primary causes of down time for all closed systems:

  • Causes blockages meaning non-budgeted maintenance / replacement of plant

Bacteria:

Bacteria can grow rapidly in low flow and stagnant areas of systems. 90% of bacteria in closed systems lives in bio-film on the surfaces of the systems. If not managed bio-film will:

  • Increase corrosion – bacteria will release corrosive by-products causing pitting
  • Reduce heat transfer – a 0.1mm layer of biofilm reduces heat transfer by 60%
  • Increase pump costs due to increased viscosity of the system water
  • Increase chemical consumption – bacteria such as Nitrogen Reducing Bacteria will use Nitrite reserves as a source of nutrients
 

Corrosion:

Corrosion in closed systems will have various effects on the system pipework and plant. Corrosion can occur from various issues such as: water chemistry; bacteria; sludging in pipework and plant.
Corrosion will lead to:

  • Increased downtime for end-users
  • Pipework failure – leading to loss of system water and pressure
